Jacobsen letter: Composting

I was very disappointed by the negative tone of the composting story in the May 24 Statesman.

I have lived in Boise 10 years and devote a corner of my backyard to composting, but because I cannot compost everything my yard produces, I still dispose of a lot of yard waste in the trash. I have hoped for years that Boise would start a composting program so this waste would no longer go into the landfill.

I am sad that the gentleman in your story does not see the modest $3.40 charge that will be necessary to fund a citywide composting program as a worthwhile donation to making our city a healthier place for everyone to live instead of a “punishment.” And I hope the Statesman will take a more supportive attitude toward constructive initiatives proposed by the city of Boise City, such as the composting program.

John Jacobsen, Boise
