Killam letter: Wild horses
I wish to comment on the article about wild horses, which appeared in the May 15 edition of the Statesman.
I can see why BLM can’t afford the $1 billion to protect the health of the rangeland and manage the horses. This is taxpayer money when the government is so deep in debt.
I see BLM has no intention of allowing the slaughter of the horses. I’d like to know why. I say open the horse slaughter plants. That would utilize the horses for their meat and hides, and provide employment for a number of people. The plants would be inspected. Inspection regulations require humane treatment for the animals. This would be better than allowing the horses to die of old age and allowing them to rot.
Sterilizing animals on the range may be a good idea, but it would be expensive.
Something must be done to reduce their numbers. I suspect anyone who can or will adopt horses has already done so.
