Harris letter: U.S. debt

The U.S. Congress is debating whether or not to give Puerto Rico the right to declare bankruptcy because the 3.5 million citizens there owe approximately $70 million in bond debt which they can’t pay. That works out to about $20,000 for every man, woman and child in the territory. The USA has a budget deficit of $18.5 trillion ($18,500,000,000,000). That works out to a debt of $154,000 for every man, woman and child in our country. My question is — when do we get to declare bankruptcy?
