Stoddard letter: Quotes from presidents

Quotes from presidents that I grew up studying:

“I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” — Washington

“He serves his party best who serves the country best.” — Hayes

“That’s all a man can hope for during his lifetime — to set an example — and when he is dead, to be an inspiration for history.” — McKinley

“The buck stops here.” — Truman

“Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” — Kennedy

Quotes from presidents in my adult years:

“I am not a crook.” — Nixon

“I did not have sexual relations with that woman.” — Clinton

“The Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised.” — Bush

Quotes from people wanting to become president:

$675,000 for three speeches? “That’s what they paid me.”

“When Mexico sends its people…They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”

“You know what they say about men with small hands.”

Is it any wonder that in my senior years I’m disillusioned with all who tell me they can “lead” this nation?

Curtis Stoddard, Eagle
