Svoboda letter: pedestrians

I am really amazed at the number of pedestrians who make no effort to look out for traffic when crossing the street and, in particular, areas in shopping malls. After residing in many different states, Idaho seems to be the worst offender. Cars backing out of parking spaces pose a hazard. In spite of backup cameras on today’s autos, there are blind spots that cannot see someone walking behind the car. Yet I have witnessed many instances where the auto would have hit the person who was not paying attention. Pedestrians need to take some responsibility in this matter and be aware of their surroundings. Cellphones rule our world but one’s own safety needs to take precedence in this instance.
