I’ve been thinking about how to respond to Michael Tomlin’s absurd guest opinion of Jan. 20th. It finally came to me. It wasn’t about its ostensible subject — climate change — it was about the conservative right’s discontent with any change at all.
Tomlin would like to tie global climate change to past media-fed pop science fads but it’s not a germane comparison. What’s really happening globally as far as climate change has been studied and documented repeatedly and the vast majority of the international scientific community is in agreement. The very few scientists who are denying the data are for the most part in the employ of corporate interests that would see their profits hurt by acknowledging that what they’re doing is going to kill us in the long run.
We can argue about conservative and liberal values; in the end we need to listen to the people who know what’s going on, and act accordingly.
