McGraw letter: The homeless

As one of 700 people who participated in the recent refugee rally, I found the Dec. 14 letters of Barbra James and Frank Lonyay ill-informed.

Both suggested those of us who demonstrated take in a homeless person or refugee. Both asked “who do they think will pay?”

Many times I have taken in people who otherwise would be homeless and on the public dole. However, I am also wise enough to know that the best answer for some is not to come to my house, but to go to places that are equipped to support them and their unique needs.

Therefore, I give regularly and liberally to organizations that provide food, medical care, housing, and mental health and substance abuse services to the needy. And I am not unique or alone.

Need more money? How about we take just one-tenth of one percent of our annual military budget and apply that $600 million to services for veterans. That would be three less F35s at an average cost of $200 million each.

I suggest you get better informed about those actually making a difference. We are doing our part. Are you?
