Bennett letter: Gun control
The recent mass killings in Colorado Springs and San Bernardino cry out for more than gun control. Those who may or should have anticipated trouble failed to alert the proper authorities.
Consider Columbine: How could the parents of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold not have suspected their sons were headed toward serious trouble?
Syed Farook’s mother lived with him and his wife yet reportedly claims she did not know they were amassing weapons and making bombs.
Along with tighter gun control, the law must hold accountable those who should have known. Willful ignorance when lives are at stake is not good enough.
An example of what must be done can be found in the aftermath of Dylann Roof’s massacre of nine African-American church members when one of his friends was arrested for failing to report a crime.
The authorities must also hold accountable those who advocate violence, whether an antiabortion preacher or a jihadist cleric. Words do have consequences.
