Letters to the editor: Legislators, social distancing, Trump, loved ones

Legislators

Our esteemed Republican state legislators held a Sine Die celebration party recently. My guess is that lots of high fives were shared about how they squashed that awful transgender sports threat to Idaho. Perhaps they grinned to each other about how the terrible diversity advocacy issues at our state universities were fixed by their visionary actions on withholding budget dollars. Surely the elimination of those pesky regulations on pesticide overspray must have been cause for great celebration.

How are your property taxes looking? Have you been to any recent hearings and felt the glow of being totally ignored by these elected geniuses? Do you think that maybe they might have had more important issues to debate and address? Let’s remember that anyone with an “R” behind their name has historically had nothing to worry about in terms of re-election.

I love living in Idaho. I abhor the way in which these state legislators consistently stoop to divide us on hot trigger issues while ignoring real issues that they need to work on. Is this what conservatism becomes within a super-majority state? Does the Republican party really represent you in these actions? Are you going to vote for these guys again?

Social distancing

Over the past several days I have observed shoppers in various grocery stores piled on top of each other while waiting in line to check out. In normal times, this is merely annoying. In the time of coronavirus, this is deadly. Everyone, please get serious and practice social distancing. The life you save may be your own.

Trump

In response to Jefferson Young’s letter concerning President Trump published on March 17. All I have to say is “here we go again”. Blaming Trump for embracing the Russians. And then going on to trash the president over what he is trying to accomplish in the world. Should we just do nothing about Kim Jong Un? As long as humans are suppressed in other countries besides our own, that is fine? During the current time of national crisis, do we want to hear these angry opinions? Opinions that have been shoved down our throats for over three years. What good are these comments doing for anyone?

Loved ones

As we pass St. Patrick’s Day and look toward Easter, Mother’s and Father’s Days loom just over the horizon. We expect to be invited to our special restaurant, as is customary. We look forward to this fun encounter as much for the tradition as the food. Sure, there’s a possibility that due to COVID-19, our favorite eatery will be shuttered, but we’ll face that if/when it happens. I love being a father, watching my sons developing into even better dads. But right now, I’m looking back at my own parents and how they helped shape me. My father died in 1989, and my mother passed in 2007. I wish today that I could have them back on “their days” one more time. I don’t think I showed them as much love, respect and gratitude as I should have when they were alive. Maybe I couldn’t make that all up with just one more holiday spent with them, but I wish I could try. Lacking that ability, I’d like to publicly thank Mom and Dad for the life they gave me. If your folks are still around, I suggest you tell them now, rather than waiting as long as I have.
