Letters to the editor: Trump, dams, guns, Bieter

Trump

In my opinion, one of the most challenging statements that one ever has to make is — I goofed! To be able to admit a mistake is to open the door to change and growth.

In my heart I know that there are many thousands of Republicans who are disenchanted with their president. I have never been a fan of his, but even I was not expecting to see the depth of his depravity,

Here is a guy who made a fortune by conning people. Every business dealing that he has been involved in and every movement that he now is making is about him winning. He is the A-plus of self-righteousness.

Trump is not a leader but a self-appointed king. Great leaders inspire, they do not subjugate. They are able to put others’ needs before their own. People know them, as Jesus said, “By their fruit.” Trump’s fruit tree is barren.

Dams

It gives me increased hope to watch conservationists join with outfitters and leaders of small rural Idaho communities, in their efforts to save the salmon and steelhead of Idaho. We must see beyond our perceived differences and unite in our many common goals.

The dams are killing the fish. Now we must cooperate to save the fish and build new technology to sustain our energy and agricultural needs as the dams are removed.

There may be a lot of finger pointing and differing opinions as this process proceeds. Please remember that the group of experts that told us the dams would not affect the fish is part of the same groups that told us:

a) Smoking cigarettes does not cause lung cancer

b) DDT is safe and does not hurt the birds

c) Insecticides do not sicken people and fish

d) Hanford can safely store radioactive waste forever

e) Global warming is a hoax

We were blessed with this small planet and the miracle of all the precious life forms upon it. It truly is a web of life. Human greed and shortsightedness is damaging that web severely. Look into the eyes of your children and grandchildren and protect all life for them.

Bieter

Until his last term, I often supported David Bieter as mayor. Too long in office, too sure of his opinion on matters, too quick to take umbrage at constituents with concerns over direction and policy; he was too full of himself and it was time for a change. The latest example of all of that are the petty actions over his continued position (one to which he appointed himself) sitting on the Capitol City Development Corporation board. That he remains there flaunts common sense and fair play and there is no indication he intends to resign. He refuses to discuss the matter with the current mayor. I doubt I would be amiss if I said several of the positions he espoused while as a member influenced his loss in the last election. What doesn’t he get? Time for Dave Bieter to bow out of any official undertakings on behalf of Boise. We deserve better. He should quit acting like a petulant child and instead attempt a modicum of grace and exit stage left.

Guns

What a sickening picture — an 11-year old girl carrying an AR-15 rifle into the Idaho Statehouse. Anyone who thinks that this is what the Founding Fathers meant when they wrote the Second Amendment, has a couple of serious screws loose.
