Letters to the editor: Oregonians, education, Eagle, name-calling

Oregonians

For the group or Oregonians that are displeased or disenfranchised enough to consider seceding from Oregon and then merge into the state of Idaho, we in Idaho have something to say: We don’t want you!

Just because you have not been effective in your state government, or you feel aligned with the Bundy clan, or you feel taking over federal buildings in Malheur country is OK... we don’t.

We don’t need angry Oregonians that can’t work things out in their state government to add burden and financial strain to our state. If you desire to secede, great, start your own 51st state or just secede from the union altogether.

Eagle

Open letter to Eagle Mayor Jason Pierce. Please:

  • Let Eagle residents enjoy their new community center at The Landing instead of making them pawns in your threat to close this welcome new facility.
  • Be a visionary. Annexation and development have multiple, long-lasting effects on a community. Don’t just let those who financed your campaign decide Eagle’s future.
  • Build the road connecting Plaza Drive to Highway 44. Why would you want to cancel a 20-year plan that would relieve traffic congestion?
  • Let our elected City Council members talk freely to city staff. Didn’t you run on open door transparency?
  • Be a leader! Tell your supporters who can’t get past the campaign to stop their false narratives, bullying and vindictive rhetoric.
  • Follow the precedent set by Stan Ridgeway and be a mayor for all of Eagle.

Education

I can’t keep quiet any longer. Rep. Barbara Ehardt and her cohorts need to spend some time volunteering in a classroom. Maybe they need to become a foster parent or visit the homes where some of these kids come from. Maybe they need access to their phones and see what is going on.

I am 72 years old and have spent most of my life working with youth as a youth leader of a church group, a high school substitute teacher, a foster parent and just a friend. I can tell you this training for teachers is badly needed. I have seen situations that every person against this money for training should see. You have no right to be against this bill until you have spent time in the classroom with the kids. When I was a kid, most moms didn’t work, and drugs were not a problem.

The things facing our teachers in the classroom today are not what they were 30 or even 20 years ago. Teachers are in need of all the help they can get!

Illiberal

Recently in the Opinion page of the Idaho Statesman where was an article titled “Barr was right, the left was wrong on Stone sentencing”, written by Jay Ambrose of the Tribune News Service. I object to the language Mr. Ambrose uses in this article, because he is using, what I consider to be, a derogatory term, which is “illiberal liberals.” I am not exactly sure who this group of illiberal liberals even is, because there is no political party associated with that. Mr. Ambrose is welcome to his political opinions but his article is not welcome because he is basically using taunting language, which serves absolutely no purpose, such as a 9 year old kid might use on the playground. The Idaho Statesman should not be publishing articles that promote taunting, jeering, or insulting any group, no matter what their political beliefs are..
