Letters to the editor: Romney, Trump, United States
Romney
I commend Mitt Romney for his courage and faithfulness to his oath to God to be an impartial juror in the fake Senate trial of Donald Trump, knowing that he would be reviled by his fellow Senators and retaliated against by Trump. One has to ask to whom the other 52 Senate Republican made their oaths, to Trump? McConnell? The Trump cult once known as the Republican party? As a Catholic, I wonder about the numerous Catholic Senators who backed Trump, apparently believing he cares about the unborn! If anyone believes that Trump’s pro-life words and actions are anything but trying to assure the support of evangelicals and conservative Catholics, they haven’t been paying attention. If there’s one thing Donald Trump has demonstrated repeatedly, it is that he cares for nothing or no one but Donald Trump. He has consistently violated the law and the Constitution with its system of checks and balances. Because his cult in power has never stopped his actions, he believes and indeed demonstrates that he is above the law, that he is the law. If we care about preserving our republic and our Constitution, it is essential that Trump be defeated as he seeks re-election!

Trump
Trump learned early on that all congressional members really cared about was being reelected. It didn’t matter about representing their constituents, it was all about power, greed, and reelection. He could own the Republican Party with 10-15% of the electorate he controlled. If they did it his way, they would get his support for the party nomination or support at the polls; if Republicans didn’t follow his lead they would not get the nomination or support at the polls. The party would lose the seat. Complete control of the party and its members with a small minority of the voters. Look at Lindsey Graham. At one time a fairly average congressman, but headed toward losing the party’s nomination. Then he became Trump’s poster child and went to no competition for the Republican nomination. The price? Completely suck up and become a poster boy for Trump, losing all his moral and ethical principles and every shred of integrity, all to be reelected. The entire party has been corrupted by their goal to be reelected, including our own senators in Idaho.
Our price, the embarrassment and disgrace to our country, Trump.

United States
As a 70-plus Idaho citizen, I am constantly reminded of how separated our country has become under the current president. When he first took office, within hours, he was using the term “Dems” and “socialists” to try to divide our country further. He refers to the military as “my Army” not our military. All of us have tribal instincts to belong to a group we trust but, in fact, the tribes do mingle in the middle and that group of citizens are truly neither Democrats or Republicans but they are United States citizens. They look at facts, not fable, and they decide on who best is qualified to be a leader and to bring us back to “united.” A leader who knows how to unite to find solutions to real issues. That 50% of the country wants to hear a leader who knows how to work with all the tribes. We don’t need someone telling us the ills of the other person. Someone who understands what united truly means and the sacrifices we have all given as a country, tribe or individual, to be so.
