I cheered a couple years ago when the NCAA finally found a way to create a playoff to crown a national champion in Division 1 football. While this was a step in the right direction, the final product needs to be an 8-team playoff instead of the current 4-team format. Still unconvinced? There are a few folks in Columbus, Ohio who would like to speak to you.
If you look at this year’s FBS rankings, you knew that somebody was going to get shafted. Either Alabama or Ohio State. When you look at professional playoffs, three rounds with six or eight teams is a solid model to emulate. There is ample time in the schedule for that first round. And we all know that the payoff to the NCAA, the schools, and the host cities for those 4 first round games would be huge. If you look at the NFL alone, you can see how many times a champion came from the ranks of teams rated lower than number 4.
So NCAA geniuses, please logically build on what you have started and turn the football championship playoff into a 3-round, 8-team affair. We will all benefit significantly.
