“Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naive trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.” — Pope Francis I, 1936-
Pope Francis agrees with the majority of economists in that supply side measures do not stimulate the economy, yet Idaho’s representatives just voted in support of the granddaddy of all supply side schemes — a tax package that will hurt some in the middle class immediately and most when, unlike the tax breaks for wealthy corporations, the breaks for those in the middle class expire.
The big donors for Republicans have been pushing hard for this reform but some of those people already pay rates as low as 1 percent of income. In all the current discussions about tax reform, have you heard the word loophole? I have not. Maybe we should replace our congressional delegation with people who will work for us, for a change.
