Lowery letter: Assault weapons

The elephant in the room is assault rifles and high-capacity magazines. These two items preclude a person getting to the shooter while they reload.

I am a Vietnam combat veteran and know what it is like to face an assault rifle and high-capacity magazine. These items are designed and made to kill people. They are easy to handle and to reload.

A carry handgun and/or a pump shotgun have always been the best self and home protection.

Assault rifles and high-capacity magazines and all other military items should be illegal, with a $10,000 fine and a year in jail for those caught with such items.

The Second Amendment was for the establishment of a well-regulated militia. Southern states asked for it to be able to quell slave rebellions that were occurring in the Caribbean. They worried that these rebellions would spill over to the mainland.

The Second Amendment was never intended for the average citizen to become a solider with all the same weapons and abilities.
