McGinty letter: Talk, don’t rant

Dear America — I have this novel idea; people should be able to speak their minds without 161,550,000 people going screamo about it.

All over the country, pockets of conservatives and liberals scream at one another behind walls of words. Berkeley, the bastion of free speech, riots when conservative speakers come to talk. Trump supporters beat on protesters.

I will not lie, I hold very liberal and libertarian beliefs, but I must abandon my brothers in this war of ideologies. By gunning down opposition with shouts and rage, you only bring supporters to their cause, the war rages on.

Therein lies the core of my beliefs on this issue, why I refuse to fight in this war of words. There is no point silencing, or screaming at, opposing ideas because they only boost the opposition’s morale to fight harder.

It is my belief that there is no better solution to the war we wage, than to talk, to debate. Not to rant and rave and rage.

We are only splitting our country asunder. We do not need to agree, but we must fulfill the United bit in United States of America.
