Lewis letter: Immigrants

I observed the article and photos in the paper in response to Trump’s decision to reverse DACA. A photo specifically showed someone holding a sign saying, “We are all immigrants — except Native Americans.” It is important to point out that African-Americans are not immigrants either. Enslaved Africans were transported in the cramped, disease-infested holds of ships while shackled as property. The enslaved had virtually no knowledge of where they were being taken or any choice in the matter. Although it is a terrible part of our history, it must not be overlooked or smoothed over. Everyone in this country should be knowledgeable of American history, which helps us all appreciate all the opportunities available here as an incredible gift and not something that is owed to anyone. We are all making America a better place when we accept and celebrate our differences.
