In summary, Boise School District’s calendar modification proposal shifts the school year to one week earlier on the calendar.
If the objective is to improve summer and family opportunities, this proposal misses the mark by merely changing the dates of those opportunities.
Might a shorter school year better reach the objective?
Last year the district canceled seven school days yet still met required instruction hours. Could two or three days from each semester be eliminated? One extra week of summer certainly improves our family and summer opportunities.
Additionally, most are willing to attend school for two or three days during Thanksgiving week if school ends before Memorial Day.
