Registration fees for hybrid vehicles: Most of us are subsidizing the few people who can afford hybrid vehicles. Idaho’s average vehicle is driven 12,000 miles per year at 20 MPG. This equates to 600 gallons of gasoline per year. State and federal fuel taxes total $0.504 per gallon, or $300 per year. Vehicles that don’t need gasoline still use the roads but are subsidized by retired people like me with 18-year-old pickups. ITD and ACHD have long lists of roadway needs. Adding $300 to annual registration fees will help with that backlog and eliminate the need for me to subsidize vehicles that I cannot afford.
