Werthmann letter: Sportsmanship

I saw a wonderful display of sportsmanship at the Idaho state track meet. The event was the 5A girls 4x100-meter relay. Most all these ladies have competed against each other scores of times in the past few years, especially those running the anchor leg for each of the eight teams. (The anchors are almost always the fastest on a given team.) Before the starting gun went off, I saw all eight anchors (many if not most of them running the last race of their high school career) gather together for a group hug ... before returning to their lanes to take their team batons in pursuit of a medal. Adversaries? Yes. But adversaries who just got the gold for excellence in sportsmanship.
