Jones letter: Presidential debates

The upcoming presidential debates will be overhyped by national media but voters who have been following the primary campaigns of the Republican and Democrat candidates know what to expect.

Count on Trump to declare himself a clear winner of each debate and urge voters to watch for the predictable Fox News poll confirming his huge victory. He will guarantee a landslide win on Nov. 8th because debate viewers will surely be infuriated that Hillary resorted to gutter politics in quoting his primary campaign statements word for word.

Count on Hillary to again apologize for prior errors in judgment and bore debate watchers with another futile attempt to engage Trump in a discussion of serious issues. Viewers expecting a political version of the Jerry Springer show will feel cheated by Hillary’s calm, uninspiring performance.

Several Republican conservatives defeated in the primaries were in disbelief that the far-right base of their party voted to entrust Trump with the nation’s future. These Republicans put country ahead of party and displayed political integrity by refusing to endorse his candidacy. Politicians who have repeatedly condemned Trump and still support him should be enshrined in the Hypocrite Hall of Fame.
