Ederer letter: Bicycling in Meridian

Traffic at the intersection of Eagle Road and Fairview Avenue and growth in Meridian:

Friday’s (Aug. 26) Statesman reported on the growth and coming traffic concerns at the busiest intersection in the state of Idaho. In particular they pointed out the popularity of The Village of Meridian and how it is a magnet for future growth involving new apartment complexes nearby. This growth will certainly increase automobile traffic.

Bicycling is a convenient way of traveling around in Meridian, and is a mode of transportation well used by our citizens. The roads are fine, smooth and level, but one must have courage when traveling in the “bicycle” lane curbside of a busy highway, like McMillan for example. Now that further expansion is being planned in the vicinity of Fairview and Eagle, I would like to urge the construction of a pedestrian/bicycle overpass over the Eagle and Fairview intersection. Such an overpass and perhaps additional bicycle lanes (away from the curb) would enhance the quality of life and make travel in the area safer, more pleasant and efficient.

Funding, of course, is possible if the will for the project is there.
