Recorded | Future of Idaho Politics: Voices of the next generation
The Idaho Statesman, in partnership with Boise State’s Institute for Advancing American Values, invites you to a panel discussion with young Idahoans, ages 16 to 25, who say they are often discounted and underestimated in the political process in the Gem State.
This is a conversation with the next generation of political leaders, not a debate on specific topics.
Some are affiliated with traditional political parties while others are not, referring to themselves as issue-based independents. Many are involved in student politics, are active with youth political groups and volunteer to work for candidates they support. They attend committee hearings on topics that impact them and often sign up to testify, but rarely are called on.
They are eager to dig into issues but are turned off by the polarization in today’s political landscape. They feel blocked from participation and frustrated.
It’s important for youth to be at the table, said Palin Hurst, 15, who attends Owyhee High School and is a member of Idaho’s Young Republican. “Today’s legislation is tomorrow’s laws.”
This panel discussion, hosted by Idaho Statesman opinion editor Scott McIntosh, is free to register and attend.
