More thunderstorms, rain and hail headed to Boise area. Here’s when

Don’t pack away your umbrellas and rain jackets yet, Boise.

“A cold, low-pressure system will bring rain showers, scattered thunderstorms, windy conditions and mountain snow” to the Boise area, the National Weather Service Boise office said in a Tuesday, April 21, post on X.

Parts of the Treasure Valley could get up to an inch of rainfall, while Bogus Basin could get nearly a foot of snow.

When will Boise see rain, gusty winds and hail?

“A low-pressure system and accompanying cold front will bring gusty winds, rain and mountain snow and a chance of thunderstorms across the state” on Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Weather Service said in its most recent Idaho state forecast.

“Moderate snow accumulations are expected in the central and northern mountains” at elevations above 6,000 feet through Thursday, the weather service said, impacting “travel over mountain passes.”

The Boise area can expect to see brief periods of heavy rain, small hail and gusty winds during thunderstorms on Tuesday, the weather service said on X.

Cooler spring weather is expected to follow thunder and hail.

“Temperatures trend warmer, but remain below normal through next weekend,” the state forecast said. “Mountains will keep a chance of light showers while valleys trend drier.”

Will the snowpack be growing?

Bogus Basin was forecast to receive up to 10 inches of fresh snowfall at higher elevations, with storms lasting from Tuesday night into Thursday morning.

As of Tuesday, the snowpack at Bogus Basin was at 41% of seasonal average, according to the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service.

What’s the weather forecast for Boise?

According to the National Weather Service’s current seven-day forecast for Boise, Tuesday was expected to be sunny with a high temperature near 82 degrees before clouds move in.

Wind gusts were expected to reach 24 mph on Tuesday, picking up to 33 mph overnight. The low temperature will be 43 degrees.

“Showers and thunderstorms” are likely before 1 a.m. Wednesday, the weather service said, with another thunderstorm possible from 1 to 3 a.m. and additional showers after 3 a.m.

Up to a quarter of an inch of rain could fall overnight Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Boise will see wind gusts up to 25 mph and a 100% chance of precipitation. The high will be close to 52.

The City of Trees could receive another inch of rainfall Wednesday, after the overnight storm.

On Wednesday night, the temperature will lower to 41. There’s an 80% chance of precipitation with wind gusts up to 23 mph.

Thursday has a 20% chance of rainfall before noon, with a high temperature around 54 and wind gusts up to 23 mph.

The temperature will drop to 35 on Thursday night as the storm system moves out of the area.

Friday is expected to be sunny with a high of 58 degrees and an overnight low of 35.

Saturday and Sunday will see more sunshine with highs around 60 and lows in the upper 30s.
