Strong spring storms are rolling into Boise with rain, thunder, dangerous winds
Strong thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain and gusty winds are expected in Boise and the Treasure Valley starting Friday night and lasting through the weekend.
The National Weather Service in Boise said widespread showers are moving in, with strong thunderstorms likely popping up over much of Southwest Idaho through Saturday evening. The agency says there is a moderate weather risk with hail, gusty winds and heavy rain.
NWS said in a post on X that wind gusts could reach 55 miles per hour, and there’s a chance of an inch of hail south of the Snake River Basin and in eastern Oregon.
The weather agency advises residents to secure outdoor items and furniture this weekend, and to seek shelter if there are lightning storms. Winds exceeding 50 mph can cause major damage, downing trees and power lines, and sending debris flying dangerously.
A meteorologist at the NWS Boise office, Korri Anderson, told the Idaho Statesman that the most severe of the storms could occur between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday.
“That is the best chance we’ll see gusts of up to 45 or 50 mph in Boise,” Anderson said.
Anderson also noted that the weather agency has not issued any warnings or advisories, but that could change as the storm system moves closer, so residents should “stay tuned.”
The storms will lessen after Friday night, but the rest of the weekend is likely to still see showers and smaller, more isolated thunderstorms, Anderson said.
Friday
Friday afternoon shows a 40% chance of showers, according to the agency’s forecast. The high temperature is expected to be about 73 degrees, and there could be some sun mixed in with clouds.
Showers and thunderstorms will roll in before midnight, and winds are expected to pick up, with gusts as high as 44 mph.
Saturday
Showers and possible thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, with a high near 66. Precipitation is at an 80% chance, so there should be rain. Saturday night is expected to see mostly cloudy weather, with the precipitation chance down to 40%.
Sunday
Rain is expected to pick up on Sunday, with a 90% chance. The NWS forecast also states that thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon.
