Thunder, rain and mountain snow headed to Boise area. When will showers start?
Rain, gusty winds and a possible thunderstorm are headed to the Boise area, according to the National Weather Service.
Meanwhile, the Bogus Basin ski resort could see significant snowfall.
Dreary weekend weather brought only “trace” amounts of precipitation to Boise, according to Sophia Adams, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Boise office.
A stronger storm will likely push into town on Wednesday, Adams told the Idaho Statesman.
Here’s what to expect:
How much rain will Boise get?
Much of Idaho was set to experience a break from cloudy weather on Tuesday, but it’s only temporary, according to the National Weather Service’s Idaho state forecast discussion.
“Weak high pressure building over the region will bring a dry and unseasonably warm day on Tuesday, with many southern valleys seeing temperatures reach the lower 60s,” the weather service said. “This brief period of calm ends Wednesday as a strong cold front moves across the state, bringing widespread rain and mountain snow.”
Adams said precipitation from the storm will be “fairly heavy” — and “a little bit more significant than what we saw this weekend.”
The meteorologist anticipates that Boise will receive between 0.25 inches and 0.45 inches of rain.
As the storm system moves out of the Treasure Valley, winds will pick up, Adams said.
Boise will see winds of 11 to 17 mph with gusts up to 28 mph on Thursday, according to the forecaster.
“Those stronger winds can be dangerous, especially if you’re traveling in high-profile vehicles,” Adams said.
She advised putting away porch furniture until the “higher winds” die down.
Bogus Basin ski resort to see fresh snow
According to Adams, Bogus Basin will receive more than 5 inches of fresh snowfall on Wednesday, with mountain snow flurries lingering through Friday.
The ski resort said it’s anticipating 5 to 7 inches of snow accumulation with snowfall being “heaviest late (Wednesday) afternoon into the evening.”
According to the Bogus Basin website, the ski resort will see its highest daily snow accumulations on average from Wednesday through March 15, based on previous seasons.
“In other words, this is the best … of the season, on the way,” Bogus Basin said.
The Bogus Basin forecast calls for “light and scattered snow showers until late morning” on Thursday, with a brief pause before snow begins again in the late afternoon.
At that point, “snowfall is forecast to be 1 inch, maybe two,” the resort said.
What’s in the weather forecast for Boise?
On Tuesday, Boise was expected to see sunshine with a high temperature of 61 degrees and an overnight low temperature near 44 degrees, according to the National Weather Service’s latest seven-day forecast.
“Rain and possibly a thunderstorm” are forecast for Wednesday, the weather service said, with showers mainly after 2 p.m.
There’s an 80% chance of precipitation during the day, with a tenth to a quarter inch of new rainfall expected.
“Higher amounts (are) possible in thunderstorms,” the weather service said.
The high will be near 56 on Wednesday, while the low will be around 35.
There is a 20% chance of rain on Thursday before 11 a.m. with wind gusts up to 28 mph.
The high on Thursday will be close to 50, with the temperature dripping to 32 overnight.
Friday will be sunny with a high around 53 and an overnight low near 33.
“Mostly cloudy” skies are in the forecast for Saturday, when the high will reach 55 and the low will drop to around 39, the weather service said.
Although more clouds are expected Sunday, it could be the warmest day of the week with a high of 62 and a low of 42.
