As Boise gets rain, Foothills get snow. Expect more of the same for days
The Boise Foothills were frosted with snow Thursday after a weather system brought in a wintry mix of precipitation.
A few areas in the Treasure Valley also got their first taste of December snow, though mostly it was rain that fell throughout the cities.
According to the National Weather Service, a system with rain and light snow settled in the western part of the Treasure Valley starting at about 10 a.m., with rain falling from Caldwell to Boise.
Throughout the day, Bogus Basin received about 3 inches of snow. The ski resort opened just after Thanksgiving Day and has continued to run limited ski lifts during the weekends. According to its website, the season total is 17 inches so far.
NWS Boise meteorologist John Smith noted that this wasn’t the first bit of snow in the Treasure Valley this fall, with winter just three days away. November was Boise’s second-warmest on record, but a couple of days had trace amounts of snow.
Boise saw rain throughout the day, and it’s supposed to be back Friday afternoon and evening, the weather service said. Some snow could return later Friday night, but low temperatures are supposed to be right around freezing.
At Bogus Basin, the snow is expected to continue through the weekend, Smith said. There should be another inch or so on Friday and maybe Sunday, and more snow is expected early next week on the mountain — up to 3 inches.
Leading up to Christmas, weather in Treasure Valley is likely to stay rainy. As of now, the weather service said there’s a 50% chance of rain Monday through Wednesday next week.
