Boise is set to have a wet and cold weekend, according to forecasts.

That could begin Friday, with the National Weather Service predicting a chance of rain and snow showers between noon and 3 p.m., with a chance of rain showers after 3 p.m. However, the forecast is for partly sunny skies with a high near 49 degrees.

“The Boise metro (area) will probably have some sprinkles here and there throughout the afternoon. There’s some more snow showers that form mainly over the mountains going into Sunday,” NWS Meteorologist Korri Anderson said in an interview with the Statesman.

NWS is predicting rain and snow showers Saturday and continued precipitation Sunday. Temperatures will rise from an estimated high of 52 degrees on Saturday to a high of 61 degrees on Sunday.

“Looks like six to 10 inches in the mountains on Sunday of new snow,” Anderson said. “It’ll be snow-covered roads driving to McCall and driving to northern Idaho. Boise should stay all rain on Sunday and it looks like the bigger issue is going to be the winds.”

The Boise metro area can expect wind speeds of 20 to 30 mph on Sunday afternoon, Anderson said.

The rain, with possible thunderstorms, will likely carry into Monday, March 17, for St. Patrick’s Day, with an 80% chance of precipitation and a high near 53 degrees. The predicted high falls just below the holiday’s average max temperature of 54 degrees for the past 149 years.
