Boise snowstorm to continue in waves into weekend. Next ‘push’ tonight, forecaster says

The National Weather Service expects snow to continue falling in Boise into the weekend.

The snow Thursday caused several afternoon road closures in the Treasure Valley, including a four-mile stretch of Interstate 84 between Boise and Nampa and both sides of the Connector that runs between downtown Boise and the freeway.

Road conditions were “icy” and “slushy,” according to a social media warning from the Boise Police Department, and the Ada County Sheriff’s Office said it received reports of 39 collisions and three slide-offs between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday.

The I-184 Connector was reopened about 4:15 p.m. Thursday. It had been closed in both directions for nearly three hours, according to the Boise Police Department. The section of I-84 that had been closed was reopened earlier.

Officials at the National Weather Service office in Boise report a 40% chance of snowfall from Thursday afternoon into the evening. Overnight, road conditions are expected to worsen, as temperatures drop to a low of 25 to 27 degrees, “breezy to gusty winds” cause decreased visibility, and the Boise area gets its “next push of snowfall,” said Sophia Adams, a meteorologist at the weather service’s Boise office.

Overnight snowfall could amount to roughly half an inch to an inch of snow by Friday morning, Adams told the Statesman in a phone interview.

By Friday afternoon around 3-4 p.m., Adams expects temperatures in the area to rise and precipitation to “transition into a rain-snow mix” that could eventually lean more toward rain in the evening.

Adams expects Friday night will dry up into Saturday afternoon before another wave of snowfall — this time not as heavy — in the Treasure Valley on Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Ski resorts and higher summits in the area could receive anywhere from 8 to 12 inches of snow between Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning.

“High, high peaks could get anywhere from maybe 18 to 24 inches,” Adams said.
