Get your layers ready, Boiseans.
Wednesday is going to get abnormally cold in the Treasure Valley, followed by heavy snowfall later in the week, according to Les Colin, a National Weather Service Boise meteorologist.
Wednesday will be the coldest morning, with a forecast low of just 3 degrees, Colin told the Idaho Statesman.
“It’s not normal,” Colin said. “Being this cold is actually very unusual, to be this cold this late in February. ... Getting a big snow, that happens only a couple of times a winter.”
In those kinds of temperatures, you don’t want to be outside for long. People should make sure their animals are inside or sheltered, if possible. If you’re driving, carry blankets, a fully charged phone and flares, Colin said, and be sure to tell people where you’re headed.
By Thursday, the very cold, dry air will be replaced by a warmer, moist air mass off the Pacific Ocean, Colin said. Over the cold ground of Idaho, that should mean plenty of snowfall through the day Thursday.
The National Weather Service is estimating 3-6- inches of snow in the valley, which is heavy for the area this time of year, Colin said. In the mountains, the snowfall totals won’t be much higher, at about 4-8 inches, he said.
By Sunday, it should be warm enough to rain, Colin said, with temperatures in the 40s. Saturday is expected to be a dry day, with highs in the upper 30s.
“That’s going to cause melting and it’s going to make a sloppy mess out of the snow,” Colin said of rain expected Sunday. “We’re going to get into rain or snow into a good part of next week, too.”
