Ready for Halloween chills, Boise? Might need to bundle up this week, grab an umbrella

This Halloween, the chill in the Boise air will not be just from the scary ghouls lurking the streets.

It will also come from near-freezing temperatures and half-inch of rain in the forecast. It’s every trick-or-treater’s worst nightmare, although dampening the mood on Harrison Boulevard in Boise’s North End is nearly impossible.

A low-pressure system is expected to move south into the Treasure Valley on Wednesday. Periods of rain will start around midnight, be persistent on Thursday and not stop until Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Boise, and temperatures will favor long-sleeve and layered costumes.

What’s the Boise Halloween weather forecast?

Weather conditions are expected to be pretty calm Wednesday, with a high of 54 degrees and a low of 40. Then the system from the Canadian northwest coast will move into the Treasure Valley late in the day, and precipitation chances will be 70% or so until Saturday morning, according to meteorologist Jackson Macfarlane.

“Thursday morning is when our chances of precipitation stay elevated through Halloween into Friday,” Macfarlane said. “Our current forecast for our rainfall amounts is calling for over four-tenths of an inch of rainfall for the Treasure Valley, although a better range would be anywhere between two-tenths and a half-inch of rain.”

Wind gusts potentially could hit 15 mph coming from the east-southeast from Thursday to Saturday, the weather service said.

The system that brings in the rain also will drop temperatures, which means Halloween not be warm. The high for Thursday is forecast at 50, but it will drop to at least 40 in the evening when people are out and about. On Friday, the high temperature will be in the upper 40s, with the low dropping all the way to 35, according to the weather service.

Boise State has a sold-out football game Friday night at Albertsons Stadium against San Diego State.

Given the Halloween night forecast, it’s recommended that trick-or-treaters and families dress accordingly.

“It’s going to be a really chilly Halloween. If you’ve got a very heavy costume, that’s great. But if you don’t, then I would say bring a coat,” Macfarlane said. “Bring extra layers, just in case you start to notice it’s getting too cold. And of course, a raincoat or an umbrella.”
