Record-breaking heat? Thunderstorms? See what the forecast has in store for Boise
Boise could be in for record heat next week.
Temperatures in the Treasure Valley are poised to surpass the 90-degree mark Friday.
The National Weather Service in Boise has forecast rapidly rising temperatures for the area after a slew of wet, overcast days earlier this month.
“We’re looking to be pretty hot,” Wasyl Hewko, a hydrometeorlogical technician with the Weather Service, told the Idaho Statesman by phone. “Hotter than normal.”
Temperatures on Sunday — Mother’s Day — are expected to reach 78 degrees, with a 20% chance of rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon and into Monday. Strong winds are also in the forecast.
Then, things should start to heat up.
The Weather Service predicts a high of 85 degrees Monday, about 13 degrees higher than normal, according to Hewko. Average temperatures for the week are historically between 72 and 73 degrees. Record temperatures are in the low 90s.
How hot will it get?
Boiseans can expect temperatures to peak Friday at 91 degrees. If that happens, the city would narrowly surpass its all-time record for the day of 90 degrees, Hewko said.
“If we hit 91 degrees, we’ll definitely break a record by one degree,” he said.
He said temperatures normally increase this time of year thanks to the angle of the sun and it coming up earlier and staying up longer. But the temperatures forecast next week are unusually high, including the low temperatures.
Still, it marks a break from the cold and rainy conditions of the past few months.
“It took a long time for us to get here. I’m not sure why,” Hewko said. “It took a while for us to break the winter pattern and those cold temperatures but now it seems like we’re doing it.”
The warm air headed towards Southern Idaho next week is coming from Arizona and Nevada, he said. The region will still maintain a bit of moisture.
But by Friday, the air in Boise will be drier.
“I’m not going to say Sahara Desert-dry but we’re going to be relatively drier compared to the areas around us,” he said. “And we’ll be less cloudy.”
