Boise is getting how warm? And then how cold? Prepare yourself for a wild weekend

The joke is very familiar in Idaho and gets paraphrased all the time:

Don’t like the weather? Just wait a few hours.

And Boise is set for some roller-coaster weather this weekend. It will approach a record-high temperature on Friday before plummeting to freezing on Saturday morning. Sunday’s temperatures will come close to a record-low high.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a temperature of 78 on Friday, just a few degrees shy of the April 8 record of 82, set in 1992.

Boise’s average high temperature for April 8 is 60 degrees.

A cold front will sweep through the region early Saturday, dropping temperatures into the low 30s. The cold will persist in the area throughout the weekend, with Sunday’s high forecast at just 47. The record-low high temperature for April 10 is 43, set in 1903, and the average high temperature for the date is 61 degrees.

“It’s not going to break the record, but it will be approaching those records,” lead forecaster Les Colin told the Idaho Statesman.

Colin said the Treasure Valley will experience unseasonably warm temperatures on Friday because of a high-pressure system that is sitting over the area. Warm winds from the southwest will blow into the valley, inching Boise toward the record high.

But it won’t last for long. The cold front will blow in from the west, bringing high winds with it. The weather service has issued a wind advisory for Boise from 9 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Saturday, with sustained winds of 30 mph and gusts up to 50.

“It will get very windy and turn sharply colder overnight,” Colin said. “And by sunrise, it will be in the 30s on Saturday morning, and we won’t get past 50 degrees or so on Saturday.”

The Treasure Valley shouldn’t expect precipitation, with a mix of sun and clouds forecast for the area. But the mountains north of Boise will get some snow, Colin said, with McCall set for about 3 inches. Brundage Mountain ski resort could get up to 6 inches.

The cold temperatures will persist in Boise through the early part of next week, before things return to normal. High temperatures Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday likely won’t reach 50.
