Driest February was recorded at Boise Airport. Here’s how little precipitation fell

With just a small chance of rain in the forecast for the final few hours of February, the National Weather Service confirmed Monday afternoon that the Boise Airport has recorded its driest February on record.

The weather service recorded just 0.08 inches — eight-hundredths of 1 inch — of precipitation at the airport, beating out the previous record of 0.18 inches in 1997.

Although the driest February at the airport, this past month still doesn’t beat out the 0.04 inches of precipitation that was recorded in downtown Boise in 1889. The weather service moved its measurement apparatus from downtown to the airport in the 1940s, meteorologist David Groenert said.

The only two days that the airport saw precipitation this month were Feb. 14 (0.07 inches) and Feb. 16 (0.01 inches), Groenert said.

The next decent chance of rain for Boise will come later in the week. The weather service is predicting a 46% chance that Boise will see at least 0.01 inches and a 7% chance of at least 0.25 inches.

“(March) is a little more active than what we saw in February,” Groenert said. “But as of now, we’re not seeing any kind of large precipitation event that would really deliver a lot of precipitation at least in the next seven to 10 days.”
