Boise under excessive heat warning as temps could reach record highs starting Sunday

Note: This story was updated Sunday afternoon with the latest information from the National Weather Service.

Brace yourself for some triple-digit heat.

The Boise branch of the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the Treasure Valley and Upper Weiser River beginning at noon Sunday and lasting until 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms with gusty wind are also possible beginning Sunday. Wind gusts up to 45 mph are possible.

Highs in the Boise area are expected to reach 100 degrees or more all three days, with the hottest temperatures predicted for Monday. Some areas could see record temperatures, including Boise, Emmett and McCall.

Boise could reach 102 degrees on Sunday, which would tie the record set in 1897. And the city could establish a new high Monday should the temperature reach the 103 that is forecast. The record for Aug. 17 is 101 in 2001.

Temperatures should dip a few degrees Tuesday in Boise with a high of 101.

Emmett could reach a record 105 on Monday, while Weiser and Mountain Home are expected to be the hottest spots in Southwest Idaho with a forecast of 106 on Monday. McCall (93 degrees), Cascade (94) and Garden Valley (103) could also see record temperatures.

The National Weather Service says hot temperatures like the ones expected over the next three days can “significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.”

Residents are encouraged to stay indoors during the heat wave. If people have to be outside, they should stay hydrated, use cover from shade or hats and take frequent breaks. The agency also emphasized the importance of ensuring children and pets aren’t left alone in vehicles, as the intense heat could prove fatal very quickly.

Cooler temperatures are expected Wednesday through Saturday, although still above normal. Pockets of afternoon showers and thunderstorms remain possible over the mountains.
