That holiday sausage you bought for this week’s festivities could contain a problem.

Olympia Provisions, a Portland, Oregon-based charcuterie company, recalled nearly a ton of its ready-to-eat holiday kielbasa sausages because they may be contaminated with foreign material — specifically metal, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced on Dec. 19.

About 1,930 pounds of the ready-to-eat holiday kielbasa was produced on Oct. 14.

What to look for in the sausage

The product was produced on Oct. 14 and marketed to retailers in California, Oregon and Washington, but also sold nationwide to customers online through the company website.

That means about two months have passed since the sausage was made and sold and the problem discovered, leading to the recall. So in case you have some of the Olympia kielbasa, look for these markings on your package:

The 16-ounce vacuum-sealed plastic packages contain one sausage, it’s fully cooked, and marked, “OLYMPIA PROVISIONS UNCURED HOLIDAY KIELBASA.” There is a “BEST IF USED BY” date stamp of “02/19/26” printed on the side of the label.

There is also an establishment number “EST. 39928” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

How the sausage problem was detected

Olympia told the Food Safety and Inspection Service that it received a consumer complaint regarding metal found in the product, the USDA said in its recall alert. “There have been no confirmed reports of injury due to consumption of this product,” the USDA said in its Dec. 19 alert.

What to do if you have the product

If you have consumed the product and are concerned about an injury, contact a healthcare provider.

If the Olympia ready-to-eat kielbasa is still in your refrigerator or freezer, don’t eat it. Return it where you bought it or throw it away.

Contact Michelle Cairo, Olympia Provisions’ owner, at michelle@olympiaprovisions.com if you have questions about the recall.
