Boise-area voters: See who’s running in the May primary for Congress, Idaho offices

And with that, the 2026 election season begins.

Below are the state and federal candidates that state election officials say met Idaho’s Friday deadline to file to run for office, plus all candidates for the Legislature and judgeships seeking to represent districts in the Treasure Valley. Newcomers challenge incumbents for nearly every seat except in the judiciary, where incumbents are often unopposed.

Republican and Democratic candidates facing opponents within their parties will appear on the May 19 primary ballot. You’ll find primary contests for both of Idaho’s U.S. House seats, U.S. Sen. Jim Risch’s seat, the governorship and some legislative seats.

All four parties in Idaho — Republican, Democratic, Constitution and Libertarian — intend to hold primaries this year. Races must have two or more candidates of the same party for a primary.

The Idaho Republican Party holds closed primaries, which means that only registered Republicans can vote in them. Democrats hold open primaries and allow anyone to vote, including registered Republicans and unaffiliated voters.

Independent candidates won’t be candidates in the primary. They will run against the primary winners in the November general election. Contested partisan county offices will appear on the primary ballot, but candidates are not listed here because they have a later filing deadline: Friday, March 13.

Candidates for Idaho’s judiciary are nonpartisan, but they appear on the May primary ballot, not in the November general election.

Below are the candidates that voters will have to choose from (R-Republican; D-Democrat; I-Independent; C-Constitution; L-Libertarian). An asterisk indicates an incumbent.

This list includes legislative Districts 10 through 22, which cover Ada, Canyon and part of Gem counties. You can find your legislative district by plugging your address into the Idaho Legislature’s “Who’s My Legislator?” page.
