DOGE planned to shutter these Boise offices. Here’s what will happen to them
Two federal offices in Boise were identified earlier this year as priorities for closure under President Donald Trump’s administration, but only one now plans to shutter, officials told the Idaho Statesman.
A Curtis Road office for the Bureau of Reclamation, which oversees water resources for the region, and a Broadway Avenue lease for U.S. Office of the Solicitor, which handles federal legal issues, were among dozens of spaces marked as priorities for lease termination in a list publicized in early March.
Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee shared the list of targeted properties, which comprised offices within the Department of the Interior, and said the closures would total over 2 million square feet of office space for the department. The cuts came from the Department of Government Efficiency, formerly run by tech billionaire Elon Musk, which worked with the General Services Administration, which manages federal government real estate.
Michael Coffey, a spokesperson for the regional Bureau of Reclamation Columbia-Pacific Northwest Regional office, told the Statesman in an email that the office is still leasing space at the Curtis Road address. The DOGE document listed a planned lease termination date for the office of June 30.
The General Services Administration declined to comment further on the future of the office space. Coffey said the bureau will “provide more updates as more information becomes available.”
“The Bureau of Reclamation remains focused on providing essential water and hydropower to the American public across the 17 Western states,” Coffey said. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are prioritizing strategic reforms to maximize resources, cut waste and enhance operational effectiveness across our facilities.”
The Bureau of Reclamation manages water resources and operates irrigation systems, dams, canals and other infrastructure in the West. The regional office is responsible for 54 reservoirs, 72 dams and 175 irrigation districts, according to its website.
Officials with the U.S. Office of the Solicitor did not return a request for comment on the status of the Boise office, which is in an office building owned by Boise State University.
University spokesperson Stephany Galbreaith told the Statesman the agency gave notice of its intent to vacate the office effective Sept. 30. That date matches the planned termination date on the DOGE document.
The Office of the Solicitor is responsible for handling the Interior Department’s legal matters. The Broadway office was the Boise Field Office, according to the department. It’s unclear what happens to the field office or its employees when the Broadway lease ends.
The federal agencies and DOGE haven’t explained why those offices were identified as candidates for lease terminations, and haven’t said why the Bureau of Reclamation retained its lease. It’s unclear whether other leases on the list were terminated.
The General Services Administration declined to provide information on individual leases, and Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee did not respond to a request for more information.
