After Minnesota shooting, Idaho Legislature takes down lawmakers’ home addresses
The Idaho Legislature has removed lawmakers’ home addresses from its website after two Minnesota lawmakers were shot in their homes Saturday, one fatally.
Authorities have said the suspect in the shootings planned to target other Democratic politicians in a campaign to “inflict fear,” The New York Times reported.
In response to the shootings, Idaho House Speaker Mike Moyle asked administrators to remove all legislators’ home addresses, though lawmakers would have the option to restore them if they wished, he told the Idaho Statesman.
“We had legislators that were concerned,” he said by text message.
House Minority Leader Ilana Rubel also asked administrators Saturday to remove lawmakers’ addresses, she told the Statesman.
Senate Minority Leader Melissa Wintrow said the move, which the Idaho Dispatch reported Tuesday, came from an “abundance of caution.” She took down her own home address years ago, she said by phone, amid public unrest and protests over COVID-19 precautions.
She said it was important to remain calm, but acknowledged the shock of learning a colleague and fellow legislator had been killed.
“That is startling,” she told the Statesman. “It’s upsetting.”
