The Idaho Secretary of State’s Office followed up on claims this week that someone on the dark web — the parts of the internet that require special, anonymity-providing tools to access — has offered voter records for sale from Idaho and several other states.
Investigators believe the Idaho data is only publicly available information, and have not found any sign that the state’s voter records system was compromised. That’s according to a news release announcing the investigation Wednesday.
The release said Secretary of State Lawerence Denney is working with the Department of Homeland Security and the National Association of Secretaries of State to investigate.
Homeland Security contacts told the state it “simply looks to be someone attempting to take available, public information and then packaging it for sale,” the news release said.
