Who’s running for Boise City Council? Check out our Voter Guide

Idaho's 2025 elections

Idaho voters have decisions to make in the November election. No federal or state offices are on the ballot in 2025, but candidates for city councils and mayor are. So are school and special-district trustees. These are the local governments that require property taxes and deliver police, public education and other services. Some of them have placed measures on the ballot asking voters to pony up property-tax money for specific needs. The Statesman is shining a spotlight on this election with news, in-depth enterprise reporting, exclusive watchdog stories, and our Voter Guide Q&As with candidates answering our questions. Colin Nash, seeking his second term in District 2, faces Josh Ellstrom and Derek James Smith. Nash was appointed to the council in April 2023 before winning a two-year term that November.

Smith has been open about his past meth addiction, and has drug charges from Maryland and Ohio. He said he wanted people to know they could overcome what they’ve been through. For more details, read what we found when we conducted background checks on 68 local candidates.
