See photos from Boise’s ‘No Kings’ protest against Trump administration

Downtown Boise filled with protesters on Saturday afternoon as thousands rallied against President Donald Trump, his administration and its immigration policies.

Demonstrators waved American flags, chanted and cheered as speakers criticized the administration for policies they said are harming the country and leading the country towards authoritarianism.

The protests came as Trump hosted a military parade in Washington, D.C. in honor of the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary, Flag Day and his 79th birthday — all of which fall on June 14.

The military parade has an estimated price tag of between $25 million to $45 million, despite efforts from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency that have slashed government spending, cut federal employees and canceled contracts.

The protest in Boise attracted thousands and was one of just hundreds planned across the country and abroad, including in places like Germany, France and Greece. No Kings rallies were also planned in Nampa, Idaho Falls, Moscow, Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint, according to the No Kings website.

The “no kings” slogan began cropping up in February after the official White House X account posted an image of Trump wearing a crown in front of New York City with the caption: “CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING! — President Donald J. Trump.”

The post came in response to New York City’s controversial congestion pricing policy that would impose fees for vehicles entering certain areas of Manhattan. The Trump administration moved to revoke federal approval of the policy, but it is still in effect.

According to a news release from No Kings, protests were held in over 2,100 cities across the country and had attracted more than 5 million participants by mid-afternoon. That number included over 200,000 participants in New York and over 100,000 in Philadelphia.
