The Census Bureau still needs to fill temporary Idaho jobs by March. Here’s how to apply

The Census Bureau is still trying to fill positions for the 2020 Census in Idaho, with many high-paying jobs still open in the Boise area.

The census, conducted every 10 years, counts every person living in the United States at the time of the count.

Although Census Bureau staff begin counting the first people of the 2020 Census in remote Alaskan villages on Tuesday, Idaho households probably won’t begin receiving census information and forms until March, with the rest of the nation. The 2020 Census will also be the first to allow every household to respond online.

“Between May and July, Census Takers will help collect responses, only to the questions on the 2020 Census Questionnaire, from households that have not yet responded,” spokeswoman Misty Slater wrote in an email to the Statesman. “Temporary Census Taker positions offer the perfect opportunity to earn extra income, while at the same time, helping your community.”

Idaho has consistently ranked as one of the fastest growing states in the country for the last few years, so an accurate count in the census is crucial. Congressional representation, state legislative district lines and federal funding is on the line as census workers and communities work together to get an accurate count.

To be eligible for a 2020 Census job, applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, working email and be a U.S. citizen. Most positions require access to a computer and a reliable vehicle. The Census Bureau is also seeking applicants who can speak more than one language, Slater said.

“Some field positions require you to work during the day so you can see addresses on buildings,” Slater wrote in the email. “Other field positions require you to interview members of the public, so you must be available to work evenings and weekends, when people are usually at home. Supervisory positions require employees to be available for certain day, evening, and/or weekend shifts.”

A census-taker working in Ada County for 25 hours a week can make $3,500 in an eight week period, according to Slater. Hourly rates for the temporary positions around the Treasure Valley are as follows:

  • Ada County: $17.50 - $18 hourly
  • Canyon County: $18 hourly
  • Owyhee County: $16 hourly
  • Elmore County: $16 hourly
  • Boise County: $16 hourly
  • Payette County: $16 hourly
  • Gem County: $16 hourly
