Idaho’s iconic Rainbow Bridge is undergoing yet more maintenance that began Tuesday to install 20-foot steel support beams.

The Idaho Transportation Department announced the closures by saying both lanes of Highway 55 along the bridge would be closed for approximately 15-minute intervals. ITD did not say how often the closures would happen, aside from the fact that they would occur over the next several weeks.

The department encouraged drivers to use U.S. 95 west of Idaho 55 while construction is ongoing.

The maintenance on the Valley County bridge follows closures in May for repairing the deck surface, reinforcing concrete bridge elements and replacing bridge expansion joints. It’s all part of a project to ensure the bridge meets current safety and capacity requirements, ITD has said.
