15-year-old killed in Garden Valley mobile home fire Sunday night
Authorities are investigating a deadly home fire in Garden Valley on Sunday night.
The structure fire destroyed a mobile home and killed a 15-year-old boy at 12 Summer Drive near the Terrace Lakes Resort, Boise County Sheriff Scott Turner confirmed to the Idaho Statesman.
His office received a 911 call about the fire at 10:04 p.m., according to Turner.
The Garden Valley Fire Department, along with other local fire units, responded to the scene and were able to extinguish the fire by 2:30 a.m.
The Garden Valley School District sent a message to parents on Monday morning letting them know a student had died.
“It is with a heavy heart that I write you,” Garden Valley School District Superintendent Hannah Spafford wrote in a message shared with the Idaho Statesman. “We received the tragic news that a ninth grader passed away in a house fire last night. We’re arranging to have additional supports for students this week. We want to offer the opportunity for you to discuss this loss with your children first.”
Turner remained at the scene through the night and was still there as of 11 a.m.
The sheriff said they didn’t know the cause of the fire yet. The Boise County Sheriff’s Office and Idaho State Fire Marshal are investigating.
“The next step is the coroner will conduct an autopsy, and we’ll conclude our investigation with the Fire Marshal’s Office and release those findings as soon as we get them,” Turner told the Statesman by phone.
