North Idaho gas station explosion Wednesday wound up being deadly. Here’s what we know
Two people were killed and two injured when a gas station exploded east of Lewiston in Clearwater County on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Idaho Department of Insurance.
The two deceased victims were found at the scene in Cardiff, a spokesperson said, and the injured individuals taken to a hospital.
“It is still way too early to even speculate the cause of this tragic event,” said Idaho State Fire Marshal Knute Sandahl. “Piecing together the events leading up to the explosion and fire could take several weeks. We must be methodical and thorough.”
A dramatic photo on Wednesday showed large black smoke billowing up from orange flames at the scene.
Investigators have been sifting through the debris and checking to see if there are more victims, according to the Idaho Department of Insurance. However, the amount of fuel on site has been an obstacle for investigators, according to a news release.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are assisting with the investigation, the release said.
