Watch: University of Idaho student plays instrument near dorms to honor students who died

A University of Idaho student was filmed playing an instrument on campus Monday afternoon in the aftermath of the deaths of four U of I students. The Moscow Police Department is investigating the deaths as homicide.

The video, filmed by U of I sophomore Olivia Gentry, shows the student slowly playing what looks to be a baritone near the student dormitories on campus.

“Many of us opened our windows to listen to him play for the four victims,” Gentry told the Idaho Statesman. “It was extremely comforting to listen to him play. We all knew why he was out there, and it kind of felt like it brought us together.”

U of I identified the four students on Monday afternoon:

Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene; Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls; and Ethan Chapin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington. (Note: Some of the identifying details were not consistent between the police and university news releases. This reflects the university’s spelling and hometowns.)

Chapin was a freshman and a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity majoring in recreation, sport and tourism management. Kernodle, a junior majoring in marketing, was also part of the university’s Greek life as a Pi Beta Phi sorority member. Mogen and Goncalves were both seniors, majoring in marketing and general studies, respectively.
