A camper walked away from his site and never returned, Idaho deputies said. He ended up lost for two days.

The 44-year-old Montana man was planning to camp near Pegleg Mountain on the Idaho-Montana border on Thursday, Oct. 6, the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies said he walked away from his campsite and never came back.

Officials said the man was lost in a “vast and remote” area. They requested additional help from other search-and-rescue teams.

For two days, rescuers searched for the missing camper. Air and ground crews scoured the area, but the camper was nowhere to be found.

On Friday, Oct. 7, the missing camper was found near a road, rescuers said.

“The hiker was a little sore, hungry and exhausted but alive,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
