Where in the US are the biggest wine drinkers? Not California apparently, data shows

Enjoying a glass of wine, Idaho? It turns out you’re definitely not alone.

Idahoans drink the most wine per capita, according to a new analysis from VinePair.

“Idaho residents drink 1.2 gallons of wine per capita, and while West Virginians, Kansans, and Mississippians drink less than 0.2 gallons of wine per capita,” VinePair said. “[Those states] drink about a gallon of beer and 2 gallons of spirits each year.”

How did VinePair come up with this list? The ranking used recent data from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to get the results, VinePair said.

Idahoans were drinking far more wine per capita than any other state. Washington, D.C., earned the No. 2 spot with about 1.02 gallons of ethanol.

This isn’t the first time Idaho topped the list for drinking the most wine. Idahoans ranked No. 1 last year as well, the Idaho Statesman reported.

“It’s plausible,” Moya Dolsby, executive director of the Idaho Wine Commission, told the Idaho Statesman last year. “Idaho does consume a lot of wine.”

California didn’t even make the top five for per-capita consumption. The state known for its wine drank about 0.62 gallons per capita, but it consumed far more gallons overall, VinePair said.

“Unsurprisingly, the highly populated states of California, Florida, New York, and Texas top the list of states drinking the most wine overall — with Wyoming, West Virginia, and South Dakota drinking the least,” VinePair said. “Top to bottom, that’s a difference of 155.6 million gallons for California and 1.2 million gallons for South Dakota.”
