Chad Daybell, visiting wife in Hawaii jail, dodges questions on missing Idaho children
The stepfather of two missing Idaho children broke his silence on Tuesday when he was approached by an ABC News reporter in Kaui, Hawaii.
Reporter Marcus Moore found Chad Daybell at a gas station and asked him several questions about 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, who were last seen in September. They and their mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, were living in Rexburg before the children disappeared.
Video shows Moore asking Daybell whether the children are OK.
“I just can’t comment. I just can’t comment,” Daybell says before shaking Moore’s hand and walking toward his car.
Moore follows, asking Daybell whether there’s “anything that you would like to say to people at all,” particularly those worried about the children or Daybell and his wife, who was arrested last week and remains in jail in Honolulu.
“Just grateful for any support,” Daybell told Moore. “We just have to wait for the legal process to work through.”
Moore again asks whether the children are OK as Daybell enters his vehicle.
“I have to go,” Daybell says. “No comment.”
It’s the first time Daybell has spoken to media since he and Vallow Daybell were served with search warrants in Hawaii last month. Daybell was silent when EastIdahoNews.com reporter Nate Eaton approached him and Vallow Daybell on Jan. 26.
Vallow Daybell had a court hearing in Hawaii late Wednesday afternoon for a judge to hear her request to lower her $5 million bail. She has another court hearing scheduled for Monday, March 2, regarding her extradition to Idaho. She refused to waive extradition last week at her initial court appearance.
